Product Details

flower garland for decoration. It is handmade by Women of the Wichi Community from fibers of chaguar plants (Tropical Bromeliad) that grow in the bushes of Northern Argentina.

Wichi Women collect leaves of Chaguar plants with sticks or machetes. They separate the fibers from the leaves. These fibers are pounded and scraped to clean and degum them. Then, they are exposed to the sun to dry and whiten. Afterwards, each fiber is twisted with the fingers impregnated in ash. In this way it becomes a strong and tangled thread. With roots, fruits, barks and leaves, dyes are prepared which will permeate the fibers when boiled. The fibers are now ready to be used.

Our products are completely handmade by Women of the Northern Argentinean Indigenous Wichi Community, Province of Formosa, Argentina.

All these women have learned from their mothers and grandmothers the art of create wonderful baskets, trays, and different products from vegetable fibers.

They know that the most beautiful pigments, are those obtained from roots, barks and resins of plants which grow in the Bushes.

All these Artisans are free and intuitive. They work together in community, applying ancient techniques and producing unique handcrafted pieces.

EACH PIECE IS NAMED AFTER THE ARTISAN.
